5000’S ORIGNIAL PLATES:

When Locomotive 5000 was delivered to the Santa Fe Railway in December of 1930, two original Baldwin Locomotive Works builders plates were installed.  The standard Baldwin practice was to mount the plates center line on the smokebox directly above the center of the steam chest, as shown in the upeer photo to the right.

However, due to the complexity of the plumbing on the fireman’s side of the locomotive the plate was mounted to the smokebox further to the rear.  See lower photo at right. 

At some point in time the original Baldwin Builder’s plate on the fireman’s side was lost leaving only the one on the engineer’s side. 

RAPS PRESERVED THE ONLY ORIGINAL!

The Railroad Artifact Preservation Society took the only remaining original Baldwin Builder’s Plate off the locomotive and had a silicone mold made.  This insures that the original can be displayed in the future Santa Fe Locomotive Development Musuem when built.  Two duplicates (serial number – 001 for engineer’s side and serial number – 002 fireman’s side) from the original have been produced and will be installed in the correct position on the 5000 while on static display. 

DUPLICATED ARE PERFECT IN EVERY DETAIL.

The photo at the top of the page is one of the reproduction plates made from the original.  It is the exact same size, weight, material (high quality bronze) as the original plate made by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1930.  In fact, the reproductions are so exact that RAPS had to have them marked so that the original would never be confused with one of the reproductions!

The replica builder’s plates are serial numbered.  Plate #001 is mounted on the engineer’s side of the smokebox.  Plate #002 002 is mounted on the fireman’s side of the smokebox.  The replicas for sale will start with serial number 003.  Order now to get the lowest number available to the general public.
